Our Call To Action As Teachers
What can we do differently as teachers and as a society?
Even with all of our theoretical study, this is what our engaging in this course has led to. Upon reflection, our group members had the following to say:
Alecia: "Where there is a will and a want, there is a way to include absolutely everyone! I need to think about how to approach difficult topics/language/conversations by understanding and empathizing with the perspectives of the student. Being open to these types of conversations can take my classroom from a safe space to a brave space. As teachers and as a society, we need to stop thinking of the way things have always been done, and start thinking of how we can do things to make learning reflective of and accessible to everyone."
Allahyar: "My takeaway is that I learned to increase my knowledge of others in terms of their social- political- religious backgrounds, in order to better understand their mindset and to be able to communicate with them in the best possible way."
Crystal: "I have a choice [as a teacher] and I don't have to conform."
Duncan: "[As a teacher] I need to be authentic and honest with my students about my own biases, perspectives, and things I don't know about."
Shuai: "The word choice changes my life. I will start to experiment with this 'step back' talk with my students."

What is this course? And why a website?
En route to our Master's Degrees, we engaged in a class called "Music Education In Inclusive Contexts". During this course, we investigated and discussed: What is 'normal', different aspects of disability, equality, culture, and much more.
This website was an opportunity to track our learning, progress, and concepts we discussed in the many facets of this course that were of particular interest to our group, and we are proud to share it with you in hopes of sparking your own learning and ideas. This website examines what we can do differently as teachers and as a society. Our group has chosen to focus on the concept of identity, but individual interests, wonderings, and examinations are present as well. Become familiar with us, browse our individual pages, review our questions for our guest lecturers and readings, view our recorded zoom sessions, marvel in our actionable school and community projects, and much more. |
